The Love that You Are

Michelangelo saw the secret in the stone
He saw the muscle and the bone
Where others saw only flat and plain
He saw the beauty and the pain

He took up his tools in his hands
He looked within for the plan
And his body became a prayer
As he chipped away what was not there

He sang a song to the truth
To coax it out of hiding
Little by little he discovered
What he could see inside him

Singing, Oh light of my soul
Oh child of my heart
You are perfectly whole
And free to be
The love that you are

I built a fortress, a pile of ancient rocks
I hung a heavy door I locked the locks
I dreamed that behind them I would be safe
That they would protect me from my hate

The prison I made was cold and dark
But not even I could not put out my spark
Nor could I silence the song of the spheres
And the music of heaven still rang in my ears

And it sang a song of the truth
To coax me out of hiding
Little by little it uncovered
Till I could see who I am

Singing, Oh light of my soul
Oh child of my heart
You are perfectly whole
And free to be
The love that you are
