Ground Hog Day by Melanie Gillies

From the secure ground of home’s retreat,
an uncomfortable disturbance interrupts this insular peace.
The choice to come out into the bright light
or return to sleep for a long winter’s night.

Mr. Ground Hog, what will you decide to do?
How will you respond to the panoramic view?
If you see your shadow, what a fright,
the prison of a cave is preferred to that scary site.
But if an inviting world appears,
perhaps an opportunity to explore here.

Will you choose to answer the call
and welcome the challenge of it all?
Or will you burrow back down and pray
for all the commotion to go away?

Will I choose to burrow deep inside
and hide
or accept the invitation to be
the presence of love, kindness and unity?
