A New Leaf – Pat Luboff

Under an October sky

The maple flaunts its orange flame

Dancing in the wind it heaves a sigh

Relieves itself and lets the sparks fly

Branches bare in winter freeze

Appear to die

But they only sleep

Dreaming of the buds of Spring

There’s no need to grieve

They’re just turning over a new leaf

In the book that bears the story of my life

The ink on the pages of the past

Has faded with age

Once golden days

are gone and never were

In the only time I have now I write

And spoil this page that was pure white

Living the examined life

Tomorrow’s pages are a mystery, a comedy, a fantasy

Sheets of paper blowing in the wind

Not one of them bears the words “the end”

I’ve been told that I will run out of ink and time

But I know that time is but a dream

And there’s no such thing as goodbye

I’ll just be turning over a new leaf
